How to compare innovative degree programmes

Look beyond the programme title and check what you will learn, practise and earn.

What to look for

  • Read the curriculum behind a new or unfamiliar programme title.
  • Look for strong foundations, assessed projects and clear support.
  • Check the exact award and recognition; a short credential is not automatically a degree.

What makes a degree programme innovative?

A programme may combine established subjects in a new way, apply them to a different problem, or change how students practise and demonstrate their skills. The useful question is what you will learn and produce. A new title alone tells you little about academic depth, recognition or career preparation.

Read the current module descriptions and assessment methods. For an artificial intelligence programme, ask how much programming, mathematics, model evaluation and responsible use you will study. For a sustainability programme, ask whether its focus is engineering, environmental science, policy or business. These are questions for comparing curricula, not claims that every programme includes the same topics.

What should you check in data science and analytics?

Look for a connected sequence of subjects that lets you work with data from acquisition through analysis and communication. Ask whether you will practise with messy data, explain your findings and complete an assessed project, rather than only follow demonstrations.

ABET’s 2026–2027 computing criteria for data science include data preparation, model development, visualisation, ethics, governance, mathematics and a major project. These describe the requirements for programmes seeking that accreditation, not every data degree. They provide a useful reference when reading a curriculum.

Check prerequisites carefully. Ask admissions which programming and mathematical skills you need at entry, what bridging support exists and whether its cost is included.

What should you ask about cybersecurity?

Ask how the course combines technical practice with risk, policy and the responsibilities of handling information. ABET’s same computing criteria identify areas such as data, software, system, organisational and societal security for cybersecurity programmes seeking its accreditation.

Request details of the lab environment, assessed exercises, hardware and software requirements. Find out whether specialist tools are supplied remotely and whether you need to attend a campus or testing centre. Ask how the programme teaches lawful, authorised security practice.

Can short credentials form part of a degree?

Short courses can help you explore a subject or build a specific skill. Whether they count towards a degree depends on the awarding institution’s rules and the exact course. Request written confirmation of credit transfer, expiry limits, entry conditions and the final award before paying.

The European Commission’s approach to micro-credentials describes them as records of learning outcomes from short learning experiences. Its framework aims to improve quality, transparency and recognition. It does not mean that every micro-credential is accepted by every university or employer.

For an interdisciplinary course, ask which department awards the qualification, how the subjects connect and whether the final award is a degree, diploma or certificate. Confirm recognition with the relevant authority where you intend to use it.

What should you confirm before applying?

Keep a short written comparison of each option. Leave room for unanswered questions; those are the questions to send to the university.

  1. What is the exact award title, level and awarding institution?
  2. Which foundational subjects are compulsory?
  3. What will I produce in assessments and the final project?
  4. What equipment, software, laboratories or campus visits are required?
  5. What prior knowledge is expected, and what support is available?
  6. What is the full cost and expected weekly workload?
  7. How is the qualification recognised in my intended country?
